Rain Clouds Approaching A Cotswold Village

Country Life

The English countryside and especially the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, contains some of the loveliest, temperate and varied landscape in the world. It is also the source of many tales and stories to be recounted in these pages. Enjoy with us some of the observations of English country life.

The English countryside (and though I am biased) Gloucestershire and the Cotswolds, in particular, contains some of the loveliest, temperate and varied landscape in the world.

Uniquely accessible from cities such as Bristol, Bath and Gloucester, the surrounding lands are characterised by undulating pastures, high plateaus, hilly terrain, open farmlands and gorgeous villages.

Beautiful and famous gardens from Hidcote to Highgrove, large estates from Badminton to Berkeley, and ancient churches from Gloucester Cathedral to crumbling rural parishes badly in need of support and restoration.

Graced by great rivers such as the River Severn, which is the second most tidal in the world with its famous bore, and the Thames which is the longest river in England, the area provides an extraordinarily diverse ecological environment for wild and farmed crops, animals and insects of all kinds. This is to say nothing of the varied human inhabitants.

The weather too can be changeable and sometimes harsh and at times cruel in the winter, the county seems to abound in micro-climates allowing for vineyards and rare plants amongst other things.

The blessings of the area are too many to recount.

The county is beloved of so many writers from our National Treasure, Jilly Cooper (and Bluebell who has the CBE) to Katie Fforde and Joanna Trollope, King Charles and even JK Rowling who was brought up at Tutshill. Not to mention that inimitable political commentator Quentin Letts was born in the county and more recently Jeremy Clarkson. There is so much literary talent here that I even hesitate to claim membership of this exclusive club.

This is the backdrop for my books which feature my beloved lurchers Robbie, Ferdie and most recently Ellie and also explore the many enchantments of life in our beloved county and beyond.
