With some sparkling prose, amusing and fascinating stories of her life with animals Pippa White's book is a must for dog lovers. However, there is more; the narrative shows the author's deep love of and affiliation with a range of creatures from ferrets to Guinea fowls and the importance of the natural world. In fact it is some of her descriptions of the passage of the seasons that have a lyrical quality that enchanted me. There are times though when I craved more detail. What was in the tasty picnic? How did she rehabilitate these poor animals to make them such delightful house dogs? I hope the author has more stories to tell of the influence that animals and nature have had on her and the way they have helped her to overcome the challenges of life.

If Mark Twain did once say, no doubt in his usual bucolic way, "if there ain't no dogs in heaven then I don't want to go there" it would appear to be a bit extreme but it would identify the powerful attraction most of us have for the companionship of these wonderful creatures. Unfortunately I and many other people find themselves in a position where it would not be fair to take on the responsibilities of owning one so I get my pleasures vicariously by borrowing them, watching them on television or reading about them. This happy and entertaining book reveals a sentiment and warmth which I am sure many like-minded readers will share with me. All dog lovers will immediately recognise the happiness that dogs have brought to the author and who knows it might even tempt them to start sharing their life with one - and it need not necessarily be a lurcher lovely though they are!
